Wallets and custody

Seed phrase

Also called: Recovery phrase, Mnemonic, Wallet seed

A master secret, often written as 12 or 24 words, from which a wallet derives all its private keys; whoever has it can recreate every address and spend from them.

Most wallets don't store a separate key for every address. They start from one random seed and derive as many keys as they need from it, in a fixed, repeatable way. Written out as words (the BIP-39 standard), the seed becomes a recovery phrase: type it into compatible software and the same addresses and balances reappear.

That convenience is also the risk. A seed phrase is every key at once. For a business it should never be typed, photographed or stored where one person can reach it alone.

What good handling looks like

  • Generated on hardware that has never been online, or inside a protected environment.
  • Never shown to a single person in full.
  • Backed up in pieces held by different people, for example with Shamir secret sharing.

On Valtu

Wallet seeds are generated and used only inside hardware enclaves. Production keys were created in an offline key ceremony on 13 October 2026, and the backup is split with Shamir secret sharing and held offline.
