Layer 2
Also called: L2, Rollup
A network that processes transactions separately and posts their data to Ethereum, giving much lower fees while relying on Ethereum for security.
Ethereum's block space is scarce, so fees can be high. Layer 2 networks batch many transactions, run them on their own chain and post the results to Ethereum. Users get lower fees and faster blocks; Ethereum provides the final record.
Things to know when you support an L2:
- It's a separate network. Coins on an L2 are separate from the same coins on Ethereum, and moving between them uses a bridge.
- Gas is usually paid in ETH, in much smaller amounts than on Ethereum.
- Bridged and native tokens differ. A token bridged from Ethereum (often marked
.e) is a different contract from one issued natively on the L2.
Base (built by Coinbase) and Lisk are both Ethereum layer 2 networks built on the OP Stack.
On Valtu
Valtu supports Base and Lisk, with the same EVM address as on Ethereum. Each is a separate network on Valtu, with its own coins and its own confirmation depth (12 blocks by default).
