Stablecoin
A token designed to hold a steady value, usually one US dollar, which makes it practical for payments, payouts and holding balances.
Stablecoins combine the speed and reach of a blockchain with the steady value of a currency. Most track the US dollar. The largest are backed by reserves of cash and short-term government debt held by the issuer, such as Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC. Others, such as DAI, are issued against collateral locked in smart contracts.
For payment businesses, stablecoins are the reason crypto rails are useful at all: customers can pay and be paid in dollars, around the clock, across borders.
What to decide
- Which stablecoins: USDT and USDC cover most demand.
- Which networks: each stablecoin exists separately on several networks, with different fees and finality.
- Issuer risk: issuers can freeze addresses and publish attestations of their reserves. Know the terms of the coins you hold.
